REVIEWS

Ilene G. (Lindy Hop)

My husband and I have always wanted to learn the lindy hop. But we’ve always been intimidated by partner dancing and feared that we wouldn’t be good learners.

Enter Emory.

We’ve been taking private lessons with her for over two months and it has been the best investment in ourselves and in our relationship—ever. She is the most gifted, patient, and thoughtful teacher we’ve ever encountered. And we think we should know because my husband and I are both teachers, too (though of much more boring things). Emory brings joy, acceptance, and understanding to her teaching. She breaks everything down so beautifully, comes up with creative strategies to reinforce our learning and to help us whenever we feel confused. It’sclear that she has thought a lot about how to teach dancing to people like us (i.e., not terribly coordinated middle-aged people.) She’s so dedicated to her students, kind, fun, and interesting. We look forward to every session with Emory. It’s like date night (actually date afternoon!) with a twist because we spend it with our great new dance teacher, who is quickly becoming a friend. Our confidence has increased a lot and we are ready to start going social dancing and are even going to try out some of what Emory has taught us at the famous 1940s swing dance ball in Boulder this summer.

Emory has been an absolute delight to work with for going on a year now! She has helped me shave off the covid rust and regain confidence within blues dance as well as guiding my partner and I in our beginner’s quest into tango as a couple. Emory has an incredible way of finding the nuance in a movement while building a larger framework in which to implement it – all with a positive energy that inspires confidence to keep growing and developing. I am so very grateful to have found Emory as an instructor and cannot say enough how talented, skilled, encouraging, and adaptable she is!

Demetria R. (Blues & Tango)

Emory is phenomenal! I have tried learning dancing on multiple occasions in the past and found it less than ideally satisfying. In contrast, Emory is able to break things down and explain them in a way that makes it all fit together well for me, make sense, and see the patterns others have not matched her in imparting to me. I love her energy and enthusiasm, and joyfully look forward to her insights and support, especially when I am having trouble absorbing things.

No one else I'd rather learn from!!

Shersten E. (Lindy Hop)

While being instructed by Emory, I have really enjoyed learning the importance of formal dancing techniques, but also the freedom of self expression and the important things I can also bring to dance.

I have noticed growth in my dancing from as soon as our very first lesson, especially in the social dancing community. Their instruction has been very empowering, and gives me self confidence on the dance floor.

Prior to Emory’s instruction, I felt like I was left to figure things out on my own without proper terms or techniques. I felt like I could only progress to a certain skill level. I never considered preforming or competing in any capacity, but am now planning to do so!

My confidence as a dancer has grown immensely, both as a lead and a follow. I have also learned the proper names and techniques for different types of dance that I had not known before. These terms and techniques have been easily transferred to my social dancing, due to their guidance. Taking lessons from Emory makes me feel empowered in my body, and has shown me that I am capable of learning new and valuable things.

I would encourage anyone who is considering taking dance lessons with Emory! They are encouraging and gentle with instruction. I have had nothing but a positive and helpful experience being their student.

Rachel H. (WCS & Lindy Hop)

Prior to Emory, I was feeling plateaued in my dancing. Having some previous dance experience, I was learning the steps okay but didn't know how to take my dancing to the next level.

Working with Emory has been such a delight! They've helped me improve my confidence while social dancing, taught me how to stylize and make my dancing my own, connect and communicate better, and even encouraged me to compete (!). The skills I've learned have not only sky rocketed my West Coast Swing and Lindy Hop but are transferable to other styles and genres as well. I feel like a much more versatile dancer, more comfortable in my own body, and more equipped (and excited!) to explore other styles.

Emory is able teach technical skills in a way that is so fun and encouraging. It's a safe space to learn and make mistakes. I have also enjoyed the mini history and music lessons they throw in - they have so much knowledge to share! Emory has really catered to my level, goals, previous experience, and learning style. I've taken different dance classes in the past and am constantly saying to Emory, "Why has no one taught me this before?!" Highly recommend!!
